I would like to clarify that this only works in doom 2 and would require some modification to function in other iwads as it requires sounds and actors supplied by the doom 2 iwad

Holy moly! I actually love the sprites for both. I recommend you to add GLDEFS for the projectiles and make the Brute's blood green. Most of the Hell Nobles have green blood. For the rest, I think it's a phenonable for being in the Repo.

thanks for the feedback, 2 things though
-they use the default doom baron ball projectile, which should have gldefs included in gzdoom
-the red blood is on purpose

I like the idea behind this monster. I always wanted to edit the Hieropant to give him the Baron's legs, but never actually did it myself.
Behavior wise, It should be more than just a Baron that shoots 3 balls instead of 1, we have Belphegor for that. Maybe try a different kind of projectile? See the other Barons in the Beastiary for inspiration. The Archons are good examples.
Sound wise, they should have new sounds, come on ;)

As for the sprites, this is gonna be a long one:
  • First of all, the animations lack the C & D frames, currently they only have 2 frames of animation. It should be BRUS/BRUT AABBCCDD 4 A_Chase.
  • Second, the rotations are wrong, the frames A2C8 & A8C2, A3C7 & A7C3, and A4C6 & A6C4, are the same, but mirrored. The purpose of mirroring frames to symetric monsters is to reduce sprite lumps, but they should be different sprites. Check the original Hieropant for example:

And this is how the Bruiser/Brute look in game:

  • Third, the death animation, it looks bad, The pixelation from the rotation looks ugly. If you want to make a death animation that involves the body splitting, you should make it spawn another actor in its death sequence, and make 2 animations. Check the Wicked, the Shadow and the Hell's Fury for examples.
  • Fourth, and this is more of an opinion rather than criticism, since JohnCook didn't seem to mind: the Anatomy. In some frames, they look like they're missing hips, and their legs are directly connected to their torsos. This is because the Hieropant's body is larger than the Baron's:

  • I compared body sizes with its Doom 64 counterpart, and it's closer to the Hieropant in body size:

Here are 2 mockups on how I would improve their designs. Number 1 is unfinished, but it is basically what you did but with their legs more separated from their torsos. Number 2 uses the Doom 64 Baron's legs instead, which are larger:

Yeah, the legs are small in comparison to the upper body, which makes it look weird. This is the first thing that caught my attention when I saw the sprite preview.

No, I'm not changing the design, because the proportions are like that intentionally as part of the design

Nevermind the proportions then, but you should consider the rest of my comment.
