Honestly, I'm not sure I totally prefer the new sound. It's good, and heavy on the bass (which is gratifying), and the compression is a bit less obvious, but I do like the "peeew" from the old sound. Honestly, either one would work, so I guess I'll leave it up to you to decide what you prefer.

Perhaps related to the offset issue, I noticed that if you have an elevated floor between you and the monster, this will cause a mis-calculation in the auto-aim, and you'll sometimes shoot over a monster, even if the elevated floor is only about waist-high. (Take the light fixtures in the penultimate room of Doom II Map 01 for example.) I'm thinking if the offset issue is fixed, this may be too. (Sorry, I haven't bashed my head against the ACS yet to find out how.)

Ill add some more to the high end to give it that "peew" sound back, but at least I have a bit more ground to work on. :)

as for the offset issue, you have at least narrowed it down to where it faults.. its a start at least.. no rush on any of this though, Im not getting my hopes up on this method of the rail attack either, I think Id like to get BlueShadows opinion on it as well, as he is more knowledgeable in the technical side of things, considering the discussion a few weeks back on the subject of autoaiming with the rail attack (I promise I wont get defensive about it this time :)).

Although thinking about it now, I could do a "quick fix" by removing the damage dealt from the rail attack, and only use that purely for the effect, and simply use a normal hitscan attack for the dealing damage... at least then it wont miss the monster altogether... but only problem is that it wont fire through the enemy.... I dont know, Im up for anything at this stage.

You want my opinion about the auto-aim thing? I get the hack vibe from it. So I suggest removing it altogether. I might dislike rail-based weapons for the lack of auto-aim, but I'm not going to automatically "no" a submission based on that dislike.

Hey Blue Shadow, thanks for dropping by.

You want my opinion about the auto-aim thing? I get the hack vibe from it. So I suggest removing it altogether.

Yea I figured as much, but I totally agree with you. As much as it works, I dont really understand it very well, and I would rather submit something that I understand than something that could potentially break something and not be able to fix it, if that makes sense.

I might dislike rail-based weapons for the lack of auto-aim, but I'm not going to automatically "no" a submission based on that dislike.

Again, I agree with the lack of auto aim being undesirable, as I myself play without mouselook, so this weapon would be pretty much useless to me if it wasnt compatible with "vanilla doom style" gameplay, so with that been said, I will remove this hack on next update and think of something I can get a better grasp on.. Maybe one day in the future when I know exactly whats going on will I play with that hack for another submission, but for now, Ill think of something else.

Thanks for the input, I appreciate it :)

Good news! With the help of ZScript, Ed the Bat of the ZDoom forums found a way to make rail attacks respect auto-aim. Here's a demo weapon (summon railrifle):

That is good news. Although, that attachment seems to only contain 17 lines worth of zscript... surely that cant be all of it?

Surprising, isn't it? But, really, what you see is all there is to it.

I think it's just about perfect! The new ZScript aiming is significantly more reliable than the previous ACS aiming was--now it's nearly on par with a hitscan attack. I don't think I could ask for more!

A small issue here: there is a case where the weapon plays its reload animation after firing and running out of ammo. It's easy to produce: start a new game. Summon and pick the weapon up. Fire until you run out of ammo. After firing the last shot, the weapon enters its reload sequence.
